Tiny Houses

Updated: Nov 22, 2018

Tiny houses have exploded into the public consciousness, however planning laws rarely allow them, especially in clusters.

Tiny houses are pared down dwellings that include sleeping areas and some other features like an ensuite and possibly a kitchenette. Tiny houses are small by modern standards in order to encourage occupants to live a healthier lifestyle with more time outside, fewer material possessions and less cleaning!

Some tiny houses are on wheels, some are not. Tiny houses on wheels are different to caravans as they have higher ceilings, loft spaces and borrow from contemporary house design. Tiny houses, even those on wheels, are not designed to be moved regularly but can be moved to a new site with relative ease compared to permanent buildings.

Tiny houses can be artistic, practical, custom designed and full of character. Tiny houses can be made with recycled materials and to high environmental standards.

Additional tiny houses could be build or sold as families grow or children move out allowing flexibility and affordability. Tiny houses could cost anything between $20,000 and $200,000 depending on the detail and finishings.

The inclusion of tiny houses in our eco villages will depend on local laws. Tiny houses could be located in close proximity to a 'centre house' with shared facilities. This is a model referred to as 'co-housing' where there is a combination of shared living and private living.
